Cheap Skateboard Review: Oxelo White

Cheap Skateboard Review: Oxelo White

We are asked a lot of questions on which cheap skateboard brands should buy? Or, which trucks, wheels or skateboards decks are the best right now? Plenty of beginners struggle with deciding the best size and shape for their new skateboard. Buying affordable skateboards doesn’t necessarily mean that you need to purchase low-quality ones. If you consider the features that a high-quality skateboard has, you can land one that is reasonable yet high quality.

We have been sent a free skateboard for beginners from GearBest to test out and review so we can provide you with some more insights on the important things you should look at when buying a new board. There are many good skateboard brands out there, and a big chunk of them are great.

The one we have received is in the lower end of the price range, and the company has a collection of some of the best affordable longboards.

We got the most expensive deck from gearbest.com. At first sight, it looks like a steady board for a beginner skateboarder. Now, before we dive deeper into the specs of this board, let’s first talk about what you need to look at when you are buying a new skateboard.

Guide to Buying a Skateboard

You mustn’t compromise and buy a cheap skateboard at the toy store for $20 because it is impossible that a skateboard for that price will be a good one. The minimum you want to pay for penny skateboards is around $50 to get started. Once you master basic skills, you can then upgrade to the more high-end brands.

The easiest way to buy the best skateboard for beginners is to head down to a local skateboard shop and buy a fully assembled one. Skateboard shops generally sell complete skateboards, but they also help you assemble one.

They can help you with questions and information, and then you can always look online afterwards to find a better deal. But what should you look for? Here are some important points to consider and how the Oxelo skateboard fits in:

Skateboard Wheels

Cheap Skateboard Trucks

Skateboard Wheels Material – First, it is really important to look at the wheels, specifically the material they are made from. If they are made of plastic, it is better to steer clear of such skateboards.

Skateboard wheels should be made of urethane, not plastic or rubber. Plastic wheels have poor grip, and you will slide out of control. Rubber wheels, on the other hand, run the risk of ripping apart.

The wheels are the sole components of the skateboard that are constantly in contact with the ground; so, you want to make sure that they are high-quality, durable, and resistant. The Oxelo board is made off polyurethane (PU), like the majority of good skateboarding wheels.

Skateboard Wheels Diameter – The size of your wheels may seem unimportant to you, but you must consider it when buying a skateboard. Ultimately, the diameter of the wheels determines how well your skateboard will turn and also have an impact on the board’s acceleration and speed.  The diameter at which you typically find skateboard wheels falls between the 49 and 75mm range.

Bigger-sized wheels contribute to faster acceleration; however, they are not ideal for skating on ramps and obstacles. If your turning and stability in urban locations matter to you, it is better to find a skateboard with smaller sized wheels. This is largely because smaller wheels account for a lowered center of gravity, which allows you to perform sharp turns, glide around edges, and practice kickflips.

Therefore, if you are looking for a cruiser or a penny longboard for that matter, make sure that it is equipped with bigger wheels to support its bigger and heavier frame.  The general rule of thumb is to look for wheels between 65 and 75mm for your freeriding and gliding adventures. The Oxelo Wheel diameter is 54mm, a perfect beginner size that is right between agility and speed.

Skateboard Bearings

Skateboard Wheels Bearings – The bearing gives wheels a spin, just like rims on a car. If the bearings are stamped with any information, see if there is an ABEC rating. The ABEC rating system is renowned and has been existed for the past 35 years. The main purpose of the leading ABEC committee (Annular Bearing Engineers Committee) is not to test every manufacturer’s bearings and then proclaim them bad or good; instead, it is to establish tolerances, dimensions, geometry, and various noise standards for different bearings.

And this is a crucial attempt to help industrial bearing manufacturers as well as users in the design, production, comparison and careful selection of various bearings for many general applications. ABEC 1 bearings are as rough and non-precise as bearings can get and yet get an ABEC rating. ABEC 9 bearings are very high quality, very precise, delicate, and spin fast.

But, we don’t use ABEC 9 bearings in skateboards. This is because the unique jarring and slamming motions of skateboarding would destroy or harm bearings that delicate. For skateboarders, getting ABEC 5 or 7 will definitely do the job.

Anything lower than ABEC 5 isn’t a good idea. This is because you start to sacrifice precision. ABEC 1 is just above no-ABEC-rating-at-all, and we recommend not getting anything that is rating 1. The Oxelo skateboard boasts an ABEC-5 rating.

Skateboard Deck

Cheap Skateboard Deck

Your skateboard deck plays a big role in the amount of pop you get off an ollie, the way the road feels under your feet, not to mention how long your set-up will last.

Skateboard Deck Width – Skateboard Deck Width – The width of many skate decks is between 7.5” and 8.75”. To choose the best size for you, consider your style and the kind of skating you do most. If you are into vertical riding, wider boards will perform better.

The same is true for larger skaters, which allow for more room for feet and a larger surface area to counteract their higher center of gravity. Narrower boards make tricks, such as kickflips, much easier. So, if you are into street riding, a smaller board width is ideal. The Oxelo board is 7.874 inches wide, so it fits in perfectly in the middle, and this is good for a starting skateboarder.

Skateboard Deck Length – The length of a skate deck is measured from the nose to the tail and tends to fall between 28″ and 32″. The shorter the board, the narrower it will likely be, and vice-versa. Generally, smaller boards work better for technical street tricks, while bigger boards are more appropriate for Vert Riders.

If you just enjoy cruising around, you might consider getting a longboard or a longer, wide board to improve your stability and balance. The Oxelo board is about 31.102 inches in length, which is an ideal starting length to try out what skateboard style fits for you.

Skateboarder Pattern

Skateboard Deck Wheelbase – The wheelbase measures the distance between the 2 sets of mounting holes. These are drilled into the deck for the trucks. It is usually about 13″ to 15″, with the preferred distance dictated both by the rider’s height and personal preference. Taller people will likely be more comfortable with a wider wheelbase because they can widen their skating stance.
