Snowboard Jacket Features Explained

It can be tricky trying to find the best snowboard jacket for you. Because of this, we’ve put together a definitive guide on snowboard jacket features.

Gore-Tex and Waterproofing

Gore-Tex is essentially just a brand of waterproof, breathable fabric that is excellent and keeping ran out, whilst also letting moisture travel out and evaporate.

Powder Skirts

Powder skirts are tight fitting waist straps underneath the jacket. They stop snow from going under your jacket or down into your pants.

These are really important when you take a fall and end up in the snow after stacking out on tricks…

Wrist Gaiters

Wrist Gaiters are just layers of insulation around your wrist which fit nice and snug. They stop your hands, wrists and forearms from getting too cold.

Layering

If you’ve ever had to dress up in lots and lots of layers in some freakishly cold country, then you already know what layering is.

snowboard jacket layering

As you can see in the diagram above, the base layer retains some of your body heat, and the mid layer retains some as well. Both of these layers keep warm air from escaping.

The outer layer, normally a raincoat, keeps the wind and rain out. At the same time, all of these layers allow perspiration to escape.

That’s why all of these bits of clothing need to be made of high-quality materials.

Get yourself a thermal base layer, an insulation layer like a fleece, and a shell layer like one of the jackets in this article.

Hard Shell, Soft Shell, or “3-in-1”?

soft shell vs hard shells

Another feature that sometimes leaves people stumped is the difference between hard shell, soft shell, and 3-in-1 jackets.

Hard Shell

Hard shell jackets are your traditional, go-to snowboard jacket.

They are good for extreme conditions and for heavy snow. This style of jacket is designed to protect the wearer against all elements.

Soft Shell

Soft shell are more of a hybrid between a hard shell and an insulation later (such as a fleece).

Jackets with a soft shell, whilst lighter, do not have the same water resistance levels of hard shell jackets. However, if it doesn’t rain much where you ski, a soft shell should be fine.

3-in-1

3-in-1 jackets, otherwise known as ‘modular’ jackets, are very popular nowadays for a number of reasons.

These jackets are layered, normally featuring a shell layer, an insulation later, as well as a waterproof layer. These jackets are so popular because you can zip them together, meaning they normally fit really well.

snowboarding jackets reviewed

This is great because, otherwise, you have to buy three separate layers and hope that they fit together well.

You can often find modular 3-in-1 jackets for sale at a hefty discount.

What’s great, as well, is that you can take them apart and just wear your fleece, shell or raincoat depending on the weather.

Insulation

There are normally 3 different kinds of materials used as insulation in cold-weather clothing:

Merino Wool is high-quality wool from the merino sheep. If you get a jacket with merino wool insulation, then lucky you. It’s very expensive, but definitely worth it.

Polyester is basically your go-to insulation nowadays. You can’t really go wrong with it, and it’s cheap as chips!

Goose Down, or goose feathers, like merino wool, is quite expensive. However, nowadays its getting cheaper and cheaper as people are coming up with better tech to make polyester more and more insulative.

Things to Consider When Buying Your Snowboard Jacket

Before you buy your snowboard jacket, there are a few other things to consider. Most important are use, weather and cost.

Use

What exactly are you going to be using your jacket for? What type of rider are you, and how much will you be riding?

If you do a lot of hiking, for instance, you’re going to want a 3-in-1 so you can easily remove layers.

snowboard jacket buying guide

Or if you just plan on doing some relaxing downhill powder lines, then you’re going to want something thicker with more insulation.

Weather

What’s the weather like where you’re going to be wearing your jacket? Is it always sunny, or does it sometimes rain? These conditions are obviously going to impact your choice of snowboard jacket.

Check for insulation, Gore-Tex, membrane material and breathability, and always consider your environment.

Cost

Cost is obviously a big factor as well. Bear your budget in mind, and try and get the best quality jacket for that price.

As you can see from this article, the more you spend, generally, the better quality you will get. However, we put a few more affordable jackets in our reviews because we know sometimes cost is a factor.

Snowboard Jacket Size Chart

When deciding which snowboard jacket is best for you, it’s important to measure your jacket size.

Below is a quick description of the different fits, and also size charts for both men and women.

snowboard jacket regular tailored fit

Classic Fit entails a fit that’s not too baggy, not too tight. Just right! These can be good for freedom of movement as long as they don’t become too baggy.

Tailored Fit is for those who don’t like their pants touching the ground or their sleeves rolling over a bit. These jackets always fit much closer to the body.
