It can be tricky trying to find the best snowboard jacket for you. Because of this, we’ve put together a definitive guide on snowboard jacket features.
Gore-Tex and Waterproofing
Gore-Tex is essentially just a brand of waterproof, breathable fabric that is excellent and keeping ran out, whilst also letting moisture travel out and evaporate.
Powder Skirts
Powder skirts are tight fitting waist straps underneath the jacket. They stop snow from going under your jacket or down into your pants.
These are really important when you take a fall and end up in the snow after stacking out on tricks…
Wrist Gaiters
Wrist Gaiters are just layers of insulation around your wrist which fit nice and snug. They stop your hands, wrists and forearms from getting too cold.
Layering
If you’ve ever had to dress up in lots and lots of layers in some freakishly cold country, then you already know what layering is.
As you can see in the diagram above, the base layer retains some of your body heat, and the mid layer retains some as well. Both of these layers keep warm air from escaping.
The outer layer, normally a raincoat, keeps the wind and rain out. At the same time, all of these layers allow perspiration to escape.
That’s why all of these bits of clothing need to be made of high-quality materials.

Hard Shell, Soft Shell, or “3-in-1”?
Another feature that sometimes leaves people stumped is the difference between hard shell, soft shell, and 3-in-1 jackets.
Hard Shell
